If everything behaved like freshly scented flowers, life would be much simpler. Unfortunately, this is not the case for most of the things we store in our homes. Moving supplies, exotic lamps, pens, printouts, camping gear, old art, jewelry, fancy kitchen gadgets, clothes, sandals, shoes, and many other items have limited utility, yet we continue to carry them from one home to another.
The accumulation of these items is due to several factors. Firstly, we forget what we already have and continue to buy or collect the same things on autopilot. This forgetfulness is often because our organization keeps less useful things out of sight, leading to a cycle of accumulation. Secondly, desire and marketing play a role, as society is bombarded with images of a luxurious lifestyle that is based on purchasing things. Despite knowing that this is not true, we continue to strive for this blissful state. Lastly, we develop a sentimental bond with things and worry that we might need them in the future.
