Unexpected events
Its been an interesting time. The events that have transpired weren’t something I could ever predict.
- I bought a house, with all payment made upfront, and am performing a general redo of the decor
- In my job, I manage 5 teams, out of which 4 have been completely laid off, and are on a 6 month retainer to help transition work to an offshore location
- My mom had a mild brain stroke, and was very sick for a while, and still has not recovered
- My daughter was laid off after only 7 months in her very first job, despite her manager, and her manager’s manager being advocates of her performance
From any standard its been a trying time. Adding on to it is the general fear climate of deteriorating macroeconomic conditions like high inflation, ongoing wars, and failure of banks.
What is keeping me sane?
I have control of how I prepare and react to events. I do not have control over predicting the events themselves.
Through my choices, I participate into events having an affect on me.
My decision making framework:
- Real limit is time, everything else (income, health, life, happiness) is transitory, and require continuous work to keep them at satisfactory levels.
- Real wealth are people around me, and need continuous investment for keeping them happy and motivated.
- Risks and rewards are unfortunately coupled. Understanding and calibrating risk is essential at all times.
- With a learning attitude, short term pain leads to long term growth.
